New released Hong Kong income statistics: The Central and Western District ranks first with HKD40,900
On March 30, the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department published the latest statistics on domestic household characteristics by District Council District. It includes data on households’ characteristics, median income and age distribution in 18 districts.
The report pointed out that in the past year, the median monthly income of Hong Kong households fell compared with 2019, and the average monthly median income per household was HK$27,000, a decrease of HK$1,700 from 2019.
Among the 18 districts, the Central and Western has the highest median monthly income of HK$40,900, and Kwun Tong has the lowest median monthly income of HK$21,700, same as 2019. The difference between the median monthly income of the two is HK$19,200, almost equals to Kun Tong’s median monthly income.

The report also shows that as of the end of 2020, the total population of Hong Kong was about 7.482 million, a decrease of about 0.3% from the previous year.
In terms of population, the most populous area is Kwun Tong with more than 686,000 people, followed by Sha Tin with more than 684,000 people. As for the least populated area, Wan Chai has 173,000 people.
The average household size in 2020 is 2.8 persons, the number is almost unchanged compares to 2019 and decrease by about 0.1 from 2018. The lowest number is 2.5 (Central and Western, Wan Chai, Yau Tsim Mong) and the highest number is 3.0 (Southern).
In 2020, the total number of domestic households in Hong Kong is 2,645,200, shows a slight increase from 2,614,400 in 2019. There is a small increase in the number of households in each district council district in 2020 compares to 2019 as well.
Looking at the population distribution, it may have some relations with the income.
Kwun Tong has the highest number of domestic households at 245,200, followed by Sha Tin at 239,300 and Yuen Long at 225,300; however, these three districts have lower median monthly income compare to the average.
On the contrary, Wan Chai (70,000), Southern (87,300), Central and Western (92,100), sees the lowest number of domestic households, meanwhile these three districts rank in the top three of the monthly median income rankings.
